If there is one phrase every native pony owner hears, it is "lives on fresh air." It sounds like a compliment — and it is, in a way. Welsh, Shetland, Dartmoor, Exmoor, New Forest, Connemara, Highland — all these breeds evolved for centuries on harsh, sparse grazing, and their metabolism is extraordinarily efficient at extracting calories from very little. That efficiency is a survival advantage on a Welsh mountainside. On a lush Surrey paddock, it is a one-way ticket to obesity, laminitis and metabolic disease. This guide is about managing the good-doer — the pony that gets fat on nothing.
Why native ponies get fat so easily
It is not a flaw — it is a genetic superpower that has become a liability. For hundreds of years, British native breeds survived on moorland, mountains and hills where grass was sparse, poor and seasonal. The ponies that survived were the ones whose bodies could extract every last calorie from rough forage and store it as fat for the lean winter months. Natural selection favoured the most efficient metabolisms.
Modern improved pasture — the kind most ponies live on now — is a different world. It is rich, fast-growing, high-sugar and available almost year-round. The pony's metabolism, still programmed for scarcity, extracts and stores calories as if winter is coming. But winter never comes in a domestic setting — there is always hay, always feed, always grass. The fat accumulates, year after year, and the pony becomes a laminitis case waiting for the right trigger.
How to tell if your pony is overweight
The first challenge is recognising the problem. Fat native ponies have become so normalised in the UK that many owners genuinely do not realise their pony is overweight. A pony that is "in good condition" is often actually obese.
Body condition scoring (BCS)
The standard system scores from 0 (emaciated) to 5 (obese). The ideal is 2.5–3. Check three areas:
- Neck: a healthy pony has a clean neck with no crest. A cresty neck — a hard, thick ridge of fat along the top — is a sign of excess fat and EMS risk. It should wobble, not be solid.
- Behind the shoulder: feel for fat pads. You should not be able to grab handfuls of fat.
- Tail head: look for fat pads either side of the tail. There should be a clean, smooth area, not lumps of fat.
- Ribs: you should be able to feel the ribs easily by running your hand along the side, but not see them. If you have to press hard to feel them, the pony is overweight.
- Backbone: a groove along the spine (a "gutter") is a sign of fat either side. The back should be flat or slightly rounded, not grooved.
Weigh-tape
A weigh-tape (£10–£15) gives an estimate of weight and, more importantly, tracks trends. Use it monthly, always at the same time of day, and record the result. The absolute number matters less than the direction of travel — is it going up, down, or staying stable?
The fat pony "look"
Common signs of an overweight native pony:
- A hard, cresty neck
- Fat pads behind the shoulder and at the tail head
- A "apple bottom" — rounded, wide hindquarters
- A groove along the backbone
- Difficulty feeling the ribs
- A pot-bellied appearance (fat inside the abdomen as well as outside)
- Puffiness or filled-in areas above the eyes
The health risks of obesity
Being overweight is not a cosmetic issue for ponies — it is a serious health risk:

- Heat intolerance: fat is an insulator. Overweight ponies struggle more in hot weather.
- Reduced fertility: in breeding stock, obesity affects conception and foaling.
- Reduced lifespan: obese ponies, on average, live shorter lives than lean ones.
Managing the good-doer: practical strategies
1. Grazing restriction
The single most important intervention. Rich grass is the main calorie source for most good-doers, and restricting it is the most effective way to control weight.
- Bare paddock or sacrifice area: a small, grass-free (or grass-poor) paddock with hay provided. The pony can still move and socialise but is not gorging on rich grass.
- Track system (paddock paradise): a fenced loop around the edge of a field that forces the pony to move to access water, shelter and hay stations. It restricts grass intake, increases movement, and provides enrichment. An excellent tool for good-doers.
- Strip grazing: using electric fencing to give the pony a small strip of fresh grass each day. Limits intake but requires daily management.
- Grazing muzzle: a well-fitted muzzle can reduce grass intake by 30–80% while allowing the pony to stay out with companions. Introduce gradually (short sessions, build up over a week), ensure it fits correctly (not rubbing), and never leave it on 24/7. The pony needs time without it to eat normally and rest its mouth.
- Turn out at night in spring and early summer — grass sugar levels are lower overnight than in bright sunshine.
- Avoid frosty mornings followed by sunny days — stressed grass accumulates sugar.
2. Forage management
- Soak hay — soaking for 30–60 minutes leaches out water-soluble sugars, reducing the calorie content by 10–30%. Discard the water and feed the soaked hay immediately.
- Use small-holed hay nets — these slow down consumption, making the hay last longer and mimicking natural trickle-feeding. Double-netting (one net inside another) slows greedy eaters further.
- Weigh the hay — a good-doer may need only 1.5% of bodyweight in forage (dry matter). For a 300kg pony, that is about 4.5kg. Weigh it — guessing leads to overfeeding.
- Never starve a pony — restrict intake, yes, but a pony should never go more than 4 hours without forage. Starvation causes gastric ulcers, stress and can trigger hyperlipaemia (a dangerous metabolic crisis in small ponies).
3. Feed
- Most good-doers do not need hard feed. A forage-based diet with a vitamin/mineral balancer is all they need.
- Avoid molasses-based feeds, conditioning mixes, and anything marketed for "weight gain" — these are the opposite of what a good-doer needs.
- If you need to give medication or supplements, use a low-calorie chaff or a small handful of soaked speedi-beet as a carrier.
4. Exercise
Exercise is not just for fitness — it improves insulin sensitivity and helps with weight management. A pony in regular work burns calories and metabolises sugar better than one standing in a field.
- Aim for 4–5 days of exercise per week — riding, lunging, long-reining or in-hand walking.
- Hill work in walk is excellent — builds muscle and burns calories without joint stress.
- Even a pony that is not ridden benefits from in-hand walks or a track system that encourages movement.
5. Monitor and adjust
- Weigh-tape monthly and record it.
- Body condition score monthly.
- Take photos every few months — it is hard to see gradual change when you see the pony every day.
- Adjust management based on results — if the pony is losing weight, maintain the plan; if not, tighten grazing further.
- Ask your vet about metabolic testing (insulin and glucose) if the pony is a persistent good-doer or has had laminitis.
The emotional challenge
Let us be honest: restricting your pony's food feels mean. You will get comments from other owners on the yard: "Why is that pony on a diet? It looks fine to me." It takes confidence to keep a pony lean when everyone else's is fat. But you are doing the right thing. A lean native pony is a healthy native pony. A fat one is a laminitis case in waiting. The kindest thing you can do for your good-doer is to keep it trim — even if it disagrees.
