Lead rein First ridden Happy hacking

Sooner or later, most pony families need a horse. A teenager grows out of their 14.2hh, or a parent wants to ride alongside them. Pony Search is built for ponies, but this section is for that next step: family horses from 14.3hh to 17.2hh.

Every horse advert answers the same honest questions as our pony adverts. Is the horse good in traffic? Will it hack out alone? Is it easy to catch, shoe, load and clip? The seller also tells you the reason for sale and anything a buyer should know. That way you can shortlist before you travel.

A bigger horse is a bigger step. It is stronger, costs more to keep and needs a rider who is ready for it. Always see a horse in person, ideally twice, and think about a vetting before you buy.

Selling a family horse?

Horses up to 17.2hh can be advertised here, at the same price as a pony advert. Every advert answers the honest questions families ask.

Frequently asked questions

When is a pony a horse?+

In the UK, anything over 14.2 hands (about 148cm) is usually called a horse. A few native breeds, such as Highlands and Connemaras, can go a little over and are still ponies. Our guide to what makes a pony explains the details.

Is a horse right for my teenager?+

It depends on the rider, not their age. A teenager who is confident, rides well and has outgrown their pony is often ready for a sensible horse. A quiet, older horse that has done the job before is usually a better first horse than a young or very forward one.

Why are there only horses up to 17.2hh?+

This section is for family horses: the kind a teenager or a parent can ride and enjoy. Most of those are between about 15hh and 16.2hh. Very big horses are a different market, so we stop at 17.2hh.

How much does it cost to advertise a horse?+

The same as a pony advert. Every advert answers the same honest questions, and we take no commission when your horse sells.
