Cobs are one of the most popular choices for families. A cob is a sturdy, strong horse with plenty of bone, often with feathered legs. Many are kind and sensible, and they can carry an adult as well as a teenager, which is why so many families move up from a pony to a cob.
This page shows horses listed as a Cob, Coloured Cob or Gypsy Cob. Every advert answers the same honest questions as our pony adverts: traffic, hacking alone, catching, shoeing, loading and clipping. The seller also gives the reason for sale and anything a buyer should know.
Not every cob is quiet, so judge the horse in front of you, not the type. Our guide to moving up from a pony to a horse covers size and what to look for.
Frequently asked questions
What is a cob?+
A type of horse rather than one breed: short-legged, strong and sturdy, and calm-natured in many cases. Coloured cobs and gypsy cobs (also called traditional cobs) are popular kinds.
Are cobs good family horses?+
Many are, because they are strong enough to carry adults and often have a steady nature. But every horse is different, so always see the horse handled and ridden before you buy.
What size is a cob?+
Many cobs are between about 14.2hh and 15.3hh, and some are bigger. Because they are broad, a smaller cob can often carry more weight than a taller, finer horse.
Do cobs need special care?+
Many cobs put on weight easily, so they need careful feeding and grazing. Feathered legs need checking for mud fever and mites.
