The Exmoor is Britain's oldest native breed and among the hardiest — a strong, sure-footed pony with a distinctive mealy muzzle and pale "toad" eyes, and a sensible, honest temperament shaped by centuries on the moor. Up to around 12.3hh, Exmoors make characterful first and family ponies and excel at working hunter, Pony Club and endurance thanks to their genuine stamina and toughness; a fit Exmoor can keep going long after a less hardy pony has flagged.
They can be a touch reserved and independent-minded until they properly trust you — this is not the same as being difficult, but it does mean a first-time family should look for a pony that is already settled and used to people rather than one straight off the moor. A well-handled Exmoor is loyal, brave and wonderfully low-maintenance to keep, needing far less feeding and management than most non-native breeds. As a genuine rare breed with a registry actively working to protect its numbers, buying a registered Exmoor also plays a small part in keeping the breed going.
Exmoors don't yet have enough adverts in our sample for a reliable price figure. As a rare, distinctive native, expect prices to reflect genuine scarcity and registered breeding rather than simple supply and demand — a well-bred, well-handled example is worth seeking out even if it takes patience to find one.
Frequently asked questions
Are Exmoor ponies suitable for children?+
Yes — they are sensible, brave and hardy, making good first and family ponies. They can be reserved at first meeting but form genuinely loyal partnerships once they know you.
How big is an Exmoor pony?+
Up to about 12.3hh, with strong bone, a thick weatherproof coat and great stamina for their size — bred to survive genuinely harsh moorland winters.
Are Exmoor ponies rare?+
Yes — they are one of the UK's rarest native breeds, with a dedicated registry working to protect numbers. Buying a registered Exmoor supports the breed's survival as well as giving you a genuinely tough, characterful pony.
