The Welsh Section C, or Welsh Pony of Cob Type, combines native hardiness with genuine cobby substance. Up to 13.2hh but chunky and strong for its height, Section Cs are wonderfully versatile — happy hacking, driving, Pony Club and showing — and their sensible, willing nature makes them excellent family and confidence-giving ponies, often able to carry a small adult too, which is a real practical bonus for a family buying on a budget.
Their strength and steadiness make them a popular choice for sharing between a child and a parent, and their all-round usefulness means a good Section C rarely sits unsold for long. As good-doers with real bone and substance, watch their weight and grazing carefully — a Section C that looks "well covered" is often simply overweight rather than healthily robust, so ask the seller honestly about how the pony is currently managed.
Welsh Section Cs appear in our price sample: asking prices ranged roughly £2,500–£6,500 through the middle half of the market, with a typical asking price around £4,500 (based on 11 adverts, read 6 August 2026). These are asking prices from other UK marketplaces, not confirmed sale prices, and the wide range reflects the breed's genuine versatility — a driving pony and a Pony Club all-rounder are priced quite differently.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Section C a good family pony?+
Very. Their substance and sensible temperament make them versatile all-rounders — good for children, driving, hacking and often light adults too, which suits a family on one pony's budget.
How big is a Welsh Section C?+
Up to 13.2hh (137cm) but stockier and stronger than a Section B, with cob-like bone and substance rather than fine riding-pony build.
