The Highland is one of the largest and strongest natives — up to 14.2hh with real bone, substance and a wonderfully gentle, steady temperament. Bred to work in the Scottish hills carrying deer and estate loads, Highlands are calm, sure-footed and famously unflappable, carrying adults and children alike on hacks, trekking, Pony Club and driving without fuss.

Their placid, sensible nature makes them superb confidence-givers for a nervous child or an adult returning to riding after time away, and their strength means a single Highland can genuinely serve a whole family as children grow and parents want to ride too — a real practical advantage over a pony that only suits one stage of one child's riding life. Hardy good-doers bred for a harsh climate, Highlands need sensible grazing management to avoid weight gain and laminitis on richer lowland pasture than they evolved for, and their thick double coat needs proper attention when clipping or managing through a warmer, wetter lowland winter than the breed is naturally built for.

Highland ponies don't currently have enough adverts in our sample for a reliable price figure. As one of the largest, strongest native breeds with genuine multi-rider usefulness, expect a well-handled example to be priced accordingly — you are typically paying for a pony that will serve the family for years, not just one child's first season.

Frequently asked questions

Are Highland ponies good for nervous riders?+

Often, yes — they are renowned for a calm, steady, unflappable temperament, which makes them excellent confidence-givers for a nervous child or an adult coming back to riding.

How much can a Highland pony carry?+

Their strength and substance (up to 14.2hh) mean they comfortably carry adults as well as children — genuinely useful share and trekking ponies for the whole family.

Do Highland ponies need careful grazing?+

Yes — they are hardy good-doers bred for a harsh climate, and rich lowland grass can cause weight gain and laminitis risk. Ask how a particular pony is currently managed for grazing.
