The Fell pony, from Cumbria and the northern fells, is a handsome, hardy native up to 14hh — usually black, with feather, real substance and a famously kind, sensible temperament. Fell ponies bred and raised on open fell in a herd tend to be exceptionally sure-footed and unbothered by traffic, weather and rough ground, producing the kind of genuinely bombproof family pony that many buyers only claim to have found.

Versatile and strong for their height, Fells make wonderful all-round family ponies for hacking, Pony Club, driving and riding-club activities, and their substance means they can carry adults as well as children — a real advantage if more than one family member wants to ride the same pony. As with any hill-bred native, ask carefully about handling: a Fell that has run largely free on the fell may be genuinely unspoilt but light on formal schooling, and it is worth knowing which you are getting. Good-natured, tough and easy to keep, a Fell thrives on far less grazing than you might expect, and needs its weight watched accordingly.

Fell ponies don't currently have enough adverts in our sample for a reliable price figure. As a substantial, versatile native capable of carrying both children and adults, expect prices to reflect that dual usefulness — a well-handled, genuinely all-round Fell is worth paying a fair price for.

Frequently asked questions

Can adults ride Fell ponies?+

Yes — their substance (up to 14hh) and strength mean they carry adults comfortably, making them popular share and family ponies where more than one person wants to ride.

Are Fell ponies good for families?+

Very — kind, sensible and versatile, they suit hacking, Pony Club and driving, and are hardy and easy to keep on modest grazing.

Is a fell-bred pony already well handled?+

It varies. Ponies raised loose on open fell in a herd are often genuinely unspoilt and honest, but that is not the same as being extensively schooled — ask specifically about handling, catching and ridden work rather than assuming.
