The Dales is a strong, sure-footed native from the Pennine dales of northern England — up to 14.2hh with plenty of bone, feather and a calm, willing temperament shaped by generations of genuine working use. Traditionally bred to carry lead ore and work the land, Dales ponies make sensible family all-rounders and excellent driving ponies, comfortably carrying older children and adults on long hacks without losing their characteristic steadiness.
Their substance is the real selling point: a Dales pony has the bone and strength to be a genuine "grows with the family" pony, useful for a child now and still capable of carrying a parent or teenager in a few years. They are a numerically rare breed, so expect fewer adverts at any one time than for more common natives, and be prepared to widen your search geographically or wait for the right one rather than expecting instant choice.
