The New Forest pony is one of the most versatile natives — up to 14.2hh, roomy, athletic and famously friendly. Raised loose among traffic, cyclists, dogs and holidaymakers in the Forest itself, they tend to be genuinely sensible on the roads and unbothered by the everyday chaos of family life, which makes them outstanding all-rounders for hacking, Pony Club, jumping, showing and dressage. Few native breeds cover as much ground, discipline-wise, as a good New Forest.
Their wide range of heights means there is a New Forest for nearly every stage — from a compact, cobby type suited to a child's first ridden pony, right up to a rangy 14.2hh capable of carrying a small adult or an older teenager. Because so many genuinely run loose on Forest commons before being caught up and sold, always ask specifically how much handling and schooling a particular pony has had; road-safe from Forest life and confirmed-safe under saddle are related but different things, and a good seller will be honest about the gap between them.
We don't yet have enough New Forest adverts in our sample for a reliable price figure, but as one of the larger, more popular native breeds with a genuinely wide size range, expect price to track height and schooling closely — a compact, well-schooled first pony and a rangy, produced 14.2hh share pony sit at very different points on the scale.
Frequently asked questions
Why are New Forest ponies good in traffic?+
Many are raised loose in the New Forest itself, among cars, cyclists and people, so they tend to be naturally sensible on the roads — though you should always confirm this for the specific pony rather than assuming it from the breed alone.
How big are New Forest ponies?+
Up to 14.2hh, with a genuinely wide range of sizes suiting everything from a child's first ridden pony to a mother-and-daughter share pony carrying an adult.
Is a Forest-bred pony already trained to ride?+
Not necessarily. Many are sold having run largely loose on the Forest and only recently caught up, so ask specifically about ridden schooling rather than assuming road sense means the pony is confirmed under saddle.
