The Welsh Mountain Pony (Section A) is arguably the definitive British first pony: small (up to 12hh), pretty, hardy and bursting with character. Generations of children have learned to ride on a Section A, and a well-schooled one is bold, sensible and forgiving — small enough for a young child to feel genuinely in control, yet full of the presence and movement that makes them stand out in the show ring, lead-rein and first-ridden classes.
Their intelligence means they need consistent, fair handling — a spoilt or under-handled Section A can become cheeky or nappy, using its small size and quick brain to test a young rider. Look for one that has been well brought up and honestly described, ideally with a track record of teaching more than one child to ride. Naturally good-doers, Section As need careful grass management to avoid laminitis, and their thick native coat and mane need regular grooming to stay presentable if you plan to show.
Welsh Section As appear regularly in our price sample: asking prices ranged roughly £2,500–£5,500 through the middle half of the market, with a typical asking price around £3,000 (based on 10 adverts, read 6 August 2026). These are asking prices from other UK marketplaces, not confirmed sale prices, and a proven, well-schooled example commands more than an unbroken youngster.

Up to 12hh (122cm). Small enough for young children yet substantial enough to do real riding, showing and lead-rein work.
Yes — a well-schooled one is a classic first pony: hardy, sensible and characterful. Choose an established pony with an honest temperament rather than something young or spoilt.
