The Welsh Cob (Section D) is the largest of the Welsh breeds, standing over 13.2hh with real presence, bone and famously flamboyant, extravagant movement that turns heads in any arena. Bold, intelligent and big-hearted, Section Ds suit older children, teenagers and adults, and excel at hacking, riding-club activities, driving and showing, where that trademark trot is genuinely hard to beat.
They are powerful ponies with plenty of character, so they reward experienced, confident riders and consistent, fair handling rather than nervous beginners looking for a quiet first pony — a Section D that isn't given clear leadership can become strong and opinionated. A genuine Welsh Cob is often described as a family friend for life: many stay with the same family for a decade or more, moving from a capable teenager down to a younger sibling as skills develop. As with the smaller Welsh sections, watch grazing and weight, since their substance can mask early laminitis risk.
Welsh Section Ds don't currently have enough adverts in our sample for a reliable price figure. As the largest, most capable Welsh section with genuine adult-carrying ability and show presence, expect prices to reflect that versatility — particularly for a pony with a proven driving or showing record.
Frequently asked questions
How big is a Welsh Section D?+
