Cambridgeshire is Fenland country — flat, open and agricultural, with some of the most fertile farmland in the country and correspondingly straightforward, if sometimes exposed and windy, riding conditions. Newmarket, just over the Suffolk border, casts a long shadow of racing and general horse culture over the wider area, which benefits the county's equestrian infrastructure even for family ponies.
The flat Fen landscape means easy going underfoot for hacking, but also little natural shelter, so ask how a pony copes with wind and open weather if you are viewing on an exposed Fen-edge yard near Ely or Wisbech. Prices are generally reasonable compared with the home counties, and the county's position makes it easy to widen a search into Suffolk, Norfolk or Bedfordshire — Cambridge itself sits at a useful crossroads for all three.
