County Down, south-east of Belfast, combines the Mourne Mountains with good lowland farmland and a strong equestrian tradition — it is close to the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society's showground and shares fully in Northern Ireland's excellent reputation for producing forward, well-schooled sport ponies. The coast and the Mournes both offer varied, attractive riding country.
As with the rest of Northern Ireland, the local Pony Club and showing scene is genuinely strong relative to the population, and ponies here are often produced to a good standard from a young age. GB-based buyers should factor in ferry or flight logistics and costs for bringing a pony across the Irish Sea, and it is worth asking for thorough video before committing to the journey.
