Cumbria is the home of the Fell pony and one of the main strongholds of the Dales, and if you are looking for a genuine native with substance this is where to start. Fell and Dales ponies bred here are typically raised on the fell in a herd, which produces sure-footed, sensible ponies that are good in traffic, easy to keep and capable of carrying an adult as well as a child — the classic family all-rounder that a child will not outgrow in two years.

Be prepared to travel and to ask careful questions about handling. A pony that has run out on the fell may be genuinely unspoilt and honest, or may simply not have been handled much — those are different things and it matters enormously for a first pony. Ask specifically about catching, feet, loading and traffic rather than accepting "he's been out with the herd" as an answer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main native breed in Cumbria?+

The Fell pony, with Dales ponies also strongly represented. Both are hardy, sure-footed natives that suit families wanting a pony to last.

Are fell-bred ponies suitable for children?+

Many are excellent — sensible, hardy and good in traffic. But check how much handling a pony has actually had. Unspoilt and unhandled are not the same thing.

Will a Fell pony carry an adult?+

Often yes. Fells and Dales are strong for their height, which is why they suit families wanting a pony that both a child and a parent can ride.
