Cumbria is the home of the Fell pony and one of the main strongholds of the Dales, and if you are looking for a genuine native with substance this is where to start. Fell and Dales ponies bred here are typically raised on the fell in a herd, which produces sure-footed, sensible ponies that are good in traffic, easy to keep and capable of carrying an adult as well as a child — the classic family all-rounder that a child will not outgrow in two years.
Be prepared to travel and to ask careful questions about handling. A pony that has run out on the fell may be genuinely unspoilt and honest, or may simply not have been handled much — those are different things and it matters enormously for a first pony. Ask specifically about catching, feet, loading and traffic rather than accepting "he's been out with the herd" as an answer.
