Rutland is England's smallest county, and it punches well above its size for horse culture — it shares the same serious hunting tradition as neighbouring Leicestershire, with the Cottesmore hunting across both, and Rutland Water gives the area a further outdoor, active character. Being small and tight-knit, the local pony community tends to know itself well.
Because it is so small, most buyers effectively treat Rutland as part of a wider Leicestershire/Northamptonshire search rather than a standalone county — there simply are not enough ponies for sale at any one time within Rutland alone to search it in isolation. Approach it as a bonus extra area to check while searching its larger neighbours, rather than a destination in its own right.
