Shropshire is quietly one of the best counties for family ponies. It borders Wales, so Welsh sections A, B, C and cobs are readily available and often bred locally rather than traded in, and it has enough hill country to produce hardy, sensible ponies while still having a strong Pony Club and showing scene.
It is a rural county with genuine breeding rather than dealing at its core, which tends to mean sellers who know their ponies well and have bred them themselves. That is worth seeking out — a breeder who has handled a pony since birth can tell you far more about its temperament than someone who bought it in a fortnight ago. Distances are manageable and the county is well placed for buyers coming from the Midlands or from Wales.
